Resources of the Himalayan Yoga Tradition

Poems by John David Wilson-written in India

Delhi to DehraDun

She wraps the world
In the fog of her Bliss:
Slowing the flow
Like rocks in the river.

Still our hearts move on
Into her unknown mystery
Across riverbeds teeming with humanity
Rising to meet the tangerine sun.

1-25-10

You cut through all my illusions
And reveal the struggles at the core:
Your peace and bliss mask the inner purpose of being,
Revealing the chaos and inexplicability outside your Love.

Ma Kali who cares for us
Shows us the universe beyond our desires and expectations,
Rips open the veils of our self-seclusion:
Purification is a terrible revelation.

All the ways I’ve dealt with uncertainty,
With the change at the core of creation--
These, my habits of repressing Truth
Lie bared before me.

Panchakarma

Purging of the old, of all tensions, stresses and attachments,
Makes room for the new, the unknown and spiritually alive.
The pilgrimage through the body
Leads to the acceptance of the Soul -
That which is always Present
Is now acknowledged, nourished and lit.

1-28-10

We are so distracted
By all the energies surrounding you,
By the lights and sounds
And passing attractions:
Yet, you remain at the center
Loving all that flows out
By giving it direction and Life.
Your constant call to our hearts
Refocuses and invigorates.
The Infinite and Eternal guide us;
Beyond All, yet within all,
Your transcendent Bliss.

1-28-10

Dehypnosis

The hypnotized mind sees
Solid and secure
The world and self:
Trained as innocents
They learn to ignore
The forces that rule
All they adore.

Re-entering that one-pointed
Unguarded, relaxed mind,
Take off the glasses of past perspectives;
View the glory of the unfettered goddess.

Through Love, we are connected:
Through the master’s Love
The flow of divine Love
Moves up and down.
Thus, the Path,
The inner way,
Spans all the outer universes
And all the Deities thereof.

On the road to Rishikesh
A wild elephant peacefully crosses before us:
Ganesh’s blessing warms the evening chill.

The love of welcome for travelers
Likewise glows upon ashram arrival.
Sufi mystic spirits lift our hearts.

This pilgrim wanders through the planets
Of distant stars, where forms of gods are common
And merge with all who encounter them.

Let your heart fill all space and time,
Loving all created within:
Then, give that heart as offering
To she who lives beyond all conception and limits.

Watch it burn, consumed
And transcend to splendor:
Know that such joy can be neither contained nor captured.

Getting to know Lord Shiva

Getting to know Lord Shiva,
The ever meditative consciousness,
Is a process of releasing
Our skepticism, doubt and self doubt,
Our illusion that such
knowing is distant or
beyond our capabilities.

Having practiced stilling
the body, mind, emotions
And entering the inner ascension,
Know that consciousness
Meditating on the thousand
petaled lotus crown.

Unify that consciousness
With the universal Being,
Knowing this, also, as your body,
The ever meditative
universal guru spirit:
Over time you will
become familiar
with the path.

Given all these suns and planets,
You have chosen this space and time
to exist in this sector of the Eternal infinities.
Recall your purpose
Knowing that the work is
never done alone,
That purpose is communal from preconception.
Know that upon which
Lord Shiva meditates,
The mystery, the source,
the shakti giving Shiva form.

Make your offerings to the dark goddess,
the Mother of both gods
and humans and all else.

Resolve to know every
breath and movement
As the dance of that divine energy.
Let every thought arise
from and return to
Her divine effulgence.                     1-31-10
Hansa Veena

Tuning one’s instrument to divine vibrations,
Music brings the mystery into being
Like mantras burning in the yajna:
These repeated chords
Massage the depths of the sensory world
Healing the fears of the heart.

This pilgrimage through the temples of music
Awakens all old devotions
And they are again offered
Into your clear and constant fire,
Note by note and chord by chord.
We pray for your Presence with music,
Our ears know your touch
And our hearts are renewed
By your ecstasy.
There is bliss that removes all clinging
And perseverance to endure
All the soundless deserts
To know your eternal dance
Deep in the cave of my heart.

Hardiwar

In the dark hours before dawn
The real pilgrims fill the roads
Carrying ceremonial, flagged bundles,
Kvars balanced on their heads.
They bring sacred Ganges water
To the temples of Lord Shiva:
Such faith that puts its feet to the road
To moisten the millions of lingas of their lord.

Sanyasin

The sacrifice of the old
Making room for the new,
Being blessed by the past
And cast into the unknown:
Such is the process of birth.
This is no death, for there is no death.
As always, life is a constant blessing.
We give it form and words
In an attempt to understand.

Each of us is a being of Light:
What is set aside are illusions,
Our false beliefs that we are other agents.
Purified, you are as you were born:
Walk forth in compassion
To become at all times the walking sacrifice,
Banishing the world’s affairs.
Water flows into water-
There is nothing to renounce.

The Ganges flows by
With the litter of Rishikesh:
So, too, the past is washed by the river of time.

2-11-10

Ashram

I have watched the divine rise up
In the hearts of devotees;
Not while they practiced their meditations,
But while they loved and served one another.

There is bliss
Living amongst the hidden and pure,
Amongst those who seek only Love as Truth.

2-12-10

Devotion

Ritual devotion
Can be either mindless,
Or transcend the mind,
Allowing energies
As mystic grace
To pour upon all open hearts.

Thus, Shiva stands over the Ganges,
Pouring Peace upon the millions of pilgrims,
Opening the world
And healing all its’ wounds.

2-13-10

Gandhi

Even the plastic toy machine guns
Sold outside Gandhi’s samadhi memorial
Do not disturb the inner calm
The gift of upliftment through ahimsa
Shared with all humanity.

The peaceful power enters every cell,
There is no other, all are emergent in the flame:
All are instruments of your Eternal ecstasy,
Now spread to every human heart.

Rebirths

The goddess glows dark
Over the mountains
Sharing the deepest mystery
In portions of Bliss
She feeds each living being.

There, in the heart, she dwells,
Wrapped in purpose, challenge and desire,
All the expectations and limitations
Mind puts upon the Eternal/Infinite source.

Follow her voice back through
        your brightest inspirations,
The guideposts of your life,
Back to before you chose to be born
When she held you in her dark embrace.

 Vaishytha's Cave

The blue green Ganges
gushes through the mountain gorge
to water the fields of India.

So, too, my world heart
Pours peace upon
open souls.

Swift glacial run off
Remains of ancient snows:
Capturing light years
of star light
Within your atomic ecstasies
Deep in the cave of the body
Eternal star burst flowers in Bliss.

As we follow the river
Back down the
mountain
to Rishikesh,

Glimpses of ancient meditations
The energy still almost audible,
Now in the cave of the skull:

Mantras cutting valleys
through the mindfield.

Silence

Only and always
In the deep inner core
Silence attracts like gravity,
Like the dark light surrounding mystery,
Consciousness from its’ habitual patterns.

The Silence is worshipped
Because it cannot be spoken,
Because it surrounds and enfolds
Every word and thought:
It is what the “OM” ripples out of.

If we were to feel every word
Emerging from that unborn Being -
Then poems would make people
Into sculptures of ecstasy.

2-8-10

Yajna

My many karma seeds,
Bowls filled again and again,
Burn in pinches of offerings
To your eternal fire.

Offering habits wound around time,
Eventually I find the rhythm,
The inner flow of growth,
The release of illusion into the Real.

Repetition, like the habits of life,
Allows us to counteract the unconscious,
To open doors through time
And arrive again where we began.

Kundalini crawling,
Awaiting the inexplicable,
With Eternal patience
Awaits the Master’s alignment,
Enticing the mystery into existence.

All that is
In the eyes of the divine
Shines with the dark glow
Of an inner universe
So silent and serene
We find it only when
We worship at your
Hidden inner altar.

Malethi

The deep mountain peace of Gharwali villages
Lit at night to keep the leopards away,
Melting into the Himalayan starlight:

Later, little children sing their way to school,
Bright with hopes of literacy
As lives link to lives in this blossoming world.

All this inner Light
Brightens every human heart
As your dark radiance emerges.

In this world,  the Lord still walks
From my heart to yours
And around through all.

Heavens arise above the farthest galaxies
Where Peace and Light stream forth
From the unborn Source.

Through all the realms of time and space,
The same unending impulse
Interacts with all its myriad forms.

2-10-10

Tarkeshvara

The ancient temple gods and goddesses bless,
Channels of fortunate energies:
Here, above the clouds,
Looking down upon creation,
A home is made for cosmic beings
Who move beyond space & time’s limitations
To deliver the Bliss
Which whirls in their own radiant hearts.

2-10-10

The Dancer

If the dancer were utterly transformed
By the dance,
Then we would know he danced in Truth,
As Shiva destroying all old patterns
That the new might emerge
Bright as a newborn
With the power the world needs now.

Millions wash in the river
To know the brightness of a new beginning:
Traveling far, with Love in their hearts,
Dancing the pilgrimage dance.

So, too, the meditative mind
Must abandon itself to the Silence,
Leaving all thoughts, forms and lessons behind.
Wherever we have walked to,
Back and forth, slowly pacing,
Is not today’s journey, but yesterday’s.

Today’s Bliss is driven by a new rhythm,
Today’s poetry flows from new valleys of the heart,
Releasing new layers of knowing.

My Conversation with Gandhi

In the same way that soldiers salute
The fallen dead and wounded;
So, also, all terrorists and assassins
Learn to salute their accomplices and themselves,
Imagining honor upon slaughter.

Thus, society seeds its own destruction -
Neglecting the proportion who will test untruths:
Only when all life is seen as sacred
Will the mind of humankind know Peace.

I have returned and merged with your Eternal flame-
All else is an adventure.
In Truth, of course, we never leave
The womb of unborn consciousness;
Rather, one’s external focus becomes fixed.

Armies of the unborn
Choose to come in compassion,
Bringing healing Bliss to every moment.

Become at one with that moment-
Be the light of that Eternal flame.

2-15-10

Uniting with Lord Shiva
Is not a going elsewhere,
It is a Being in all spaces -
Because the ever-meditative,
In perfecting being Now,
Is consciousness everywhere.

Likewise, these thousands of birds,
When body and mind are stilled,
Appear from behind every tree and grass
Singing their Bliss,
At one with the source of all Life.

Astronomical Observations - Jaipur

Sun and shade
The primordial ingredient of life
Broken up by starlight
And the desires of people and their rulers -
Instrumented to measure time:
Thus, the labors of lifetimes
Draw out from the eternal Present
All the dramas of our own deception.

The beauty is in gathering
The evidence of each divinity,
Each child of starlight born
To bless this world with infinite compassion.

2-17-10

There Is

There is a kingdom that I come from,
Out beyond the stars,
Beyond all earthly imagination,
Where all are wrapped in interbeing
And Love is the commerce of our hearts.

Indeed, we’ve never left that source,
But learned to live in time and space,
To share the tenderness which we feel
With eyes and words and hands,
To bring that vastness to a point
And let it vibrate out again.

Each breath fills up a moment
And releases it back to all:
The rhythmic flow of breath to breath
Strings together mind’s attention span
Until it affirms Eternity.

Estepona
Meditate as if the goddess
Were looking down at beach pebbles,
Choosing a few to put in her pocket for gifts.

Would you be a chosen pebble
Round of breath,
Smooth of mind,
Bright with Love
To fill her grandchild with awe?

Feel her caressing you in her hand,
Contemplating your fate.
The divine looks upon all:
Happy are those awake and looking back.

Jerez

Lorenzo smiles,
Seeing love spreading around him:
A humble, retired mechanic,
Comfortable in his own town,
Reaching out for those
Who will recommend him to the divine.
In return, he promises to remember and recommend me.

Here is a human being
Treating strangers as brothers & sisters,
Sharing happiness as few dare to do.

Andalusian Haiku

Awakened by Love
In the twilight together:
Heaven is so close.

Love shines upon us
Like music in the body:
Flowing in the breath.

Being consciousness
Wrapped in space and time today,
I plant Peace in hearts.

Pilgrim meets pilgrim,
Divine sees into divine,
The journey is Now.
